Traditional Galungan festival Bali

Galungan Festival is 10 10-day festival held throughout the whole of Bali Island, celebrated every six months. The festival celebrates the Hindu gods and, most importantly, the triumph of good over evil. It is believed that during these 10 days, the Balinese gods descend to earth for the festivities;s other than that also the ancestral spirits also join the gods and descend to be part of the festivities. For this reason, lavish decorations are done throughout the island to honor their arrival.

On the right side entrance of every home is an enormous bamboo pole covered and beautifully decorated with woven young coconut leaves, cakes, fruits, and flowers. The last day of the festival is most important as it is the climax of the ten day Galungan.

The day is spent in prayers and a special ritual ceremony held for the Balinese ancestors' spirits. Traditional dishes are prepared and offered to the gods at temples and shrines, and all the families come together to eat and celebrate, wearing traditional clothes and dress. If one is in Bali during the festival, they are in for an experience of a lifetime time witnessing all the events and being part of this spectacular festival.
