Damai eco-role-model for the region’s resorts

Damai in Lovina, North Bali, has for years been implementing and improving an ambitious environmental programme covering waste treatment, water- and energy conservation, and a detailed manual for organic resort operation. Now the leading resort of North Bali has been chosen to be a role model for other hotels and resorts of the region, and also serve as a field laboratory for new concepts in sustainable resort operation. The regional government in Singaraja has just launched a wide reaching programme for making the North Bali tourism even greener, and Damai is put forth as the example for other resorts on the island.

”The things we do at Damai are fairly low-tech and can easily be adapted by both a family-run losmen and a 50-room hotel. There is no hocus pocus, and the equipment used is mostly locally made, not imported from Basel or Toronto,” says Rory McTiernan, who is the head of Damai’s environmental programme. McTiernan has a university degree in agriculture, and has for decades also been working as an environmental consultant for various industries across the Indonesian archipelago.

”Many of the practices are not only more cost-effective, but often simple and easy to implement, such as sorting the garbage and ensuring proper disposal of waste, although we sometimes need to find alternate ways of recycling the materials, since no institutions exist up here. With the plastic water bottles, for instance, we have put up an open container by the main road where we just put all of them in, and during the day they simply get picked up by locals who need them for something in their business or in the household.”

’As opposed to the South part of the island, tourism has not yet had any harmful impact on the environment up here. North Bali is still untouched, and it is a wise and commendable initiative launched by the local government to keep it that way. We are proud to be chosen as the model resort, and happy that we are allowed to share our experiences to keep Bali green.

”Your mandi is ready, Madam”

Bali is to spa what Paris is to fashion. The serene tropical island is like a trend lab for spa therapies, and the luxurious boutique hotels are at constant work to design new inventive treatments to bring you bodily bliss as well as perfecting the traditional Asian techniques to restore balance in your body’s energies. To spoil yourself with the latest bid for the ultimate in pampering, you should travel to the Damai on the island’s pristine North Coast and ask your villa butler for a ’mandi’.

Mandi is the Indonesian word for bath. In Damai’s version, it is a treatment bath, performed in the luxurious space of your own villa bathroom by one or two of the resort’s experienced therapists. The treatments themselves are centered around the Javanese mandi lulur, the traditional flower bath that is both romantic and utterly enjoyable, combined with massages, body scrubs, aromatherapy, beauty treatments, and manicures. Perhaps combined with servings of champagne, fruits, and teas.

The treatments are created by Made and Sally Wijaya, the husband and wife team who lead the Damai Spa.

Five Star farming:Damai opens own organic farm

Damai in North Bali has long been knicknamed ’Bali’s gourmet retreat’, and the small luxurious resort’s foodie followers have grown to appreciate the organic delicacies being served by the resort’s inspired chefs. For years most of the herbs and vegetables used in the kitchen have been grown in the resort’s own ecological market garden, and diners could gather their appetite on an afternoon stroll through the exotic gardens, while inspecting the ingredients for tonight’s upcoming feast. Now, the resort wil not only grow its own ingredients, but also breed them.

”We really wanted to be even more in control of the quality of the ingredients used in our kitchen,” says the resort’s owner, Nils Normann. ”Especially with selected cuts and varieties of meat, such as pig, rabbit, and duck, we wished to be in full control of all parts of the process before we served it on our tables.”

Which is why the resort’s residents is no longer restricted to the human species, but number both free range pigs, rabbits, pigeons and ducks, as well as more exotic livestock such as frogs and snails (used in the resort’s ominous-sounding but delicious snail soup), and fresh water lobsters, bred in large basins at the bottom of the neighboring valley. All operations are 100% organic.

”We also started this to introduce a more environmentally sustainable operation. All the meat we used before was normally flown in from far-away places to get the best quality, but now we just have to cross the road, and most of the kitchen waste is now used on the farm. Even some of the snails we breed over here are used as food for the lobsters,” says Nils Normann. ”The farm is still new, but soon we will be able to serve our very own bacon, which we will produce in collaboration with an Australian butcher in South Bali. It’s going to be delicious. The only meat where I dont expect a huge difference in quality is with the chicken. The traditional Balinese kampung chickens are all free range and absolutely delicious.”

World Top 5 Over-Water Luxury Bungalow Destinations

If you like the thought of one of the long, lazy luxury vacation packages at some of the world’s most pristine tropical playgrounds, wouldn’t it be even better if you could continue being surrounded by crystal clear water even while you are relaxing in your hotel room? In an over-water bungalow, you can do just that.

Imagine complementing your holiday with the sensational experience of staying in an over-water bungalow, where you can look through the glass bottom floor to watch the colorful reef fish and sting rays playing below you. Many of the over-water bungalow resorts also offer delicious canoe breakfasts where your fresh gourmet breakfast will be delivered directly to your villa by a friendly local in a canoe.

Here are our picks of the top five over-water bungalow destinations:

1. Tahiti

One of the most exotic and romantic parts of the dazzling South Pacific would surely have to be Tahiti. Over-water bungalows originated in Tahiti and the surrounding islands back in the 1960s so it’s no surprise that the majority of luxury Tahiti resorts have over-water bungalows available.
The Bora Bora Lagoon Resort and Spa is truly decadent, complete with a satellite and plasma TV, air-conditioning, and a private security safe. Of course, it also has exquisite views! If you like to pamper yourself with champagne and bubble baths, you will love the divine bathrooms in the over-water bungalows at the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort and Thalasso Spa. Of course, this comes complete with glass floors and even clear coffee tables so they don’t obstruct your view.

2. Maldives

The ever-glorious Maldives are perfect at any time of the year and the best way to make the most of your luxury Maldives holiday is by staying at one of the many over-water bungalows – or water villas – on offer here. At the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island resort, you can not only enjoy your over-water villa, you can also dine in the unique underwater restaurant, Ithaa.
Cocoa Island Resort is 30 minutes from the airport by speedboat and is well worth the trip. Owned by the COMO Hotels and Resorts group, it has the same elegance that is typical of these resorts. Nearby Kandooma Channel has been referred to as one of the Maldives’ best dive sites, with excellent snorkeling spots nearby too.
Other resorts where you can treat yourself to a stay in an over-water bungalow in the Maldives include the Four Seasons Kuda Huraa Resort, Baros Resort, and One and Only Kanuhara.

3. Mauritius

Mauritius is another tropical paradise located off the African coast, in the southwest of the Indian Ocean. This island has a more cosmopolitan atmosphere and is somewhere you can blend relaxing days on the beach with vibrant water activities, great shopping, fine dining, and exciting nightlife. The only Mauritius resort offering over-water bungalows is Le Prince Maurice, where you can also enjoy glass-bottomed boat tours, water sports, and use of the resort’s two golf courses, located nearby on the mainland. Sheltered from winds, this private sanctuary provides many secluded retreats as well as a natural fish reserve.

4. Caribbean

If you want to enjoy a luxury Caribbean holiday, there is only one resort that offers over-water bungalows, and that is the 9 Beaches Resort in Bermuda. Choose from one of 84 stylish cabanas, all located over 18 acres of exquisite private waterfront. You can spend your days participating in all manner of water sports and activities, or simply put your feet up and sip ice-cold cocktails and daiquiris while lazing on the soft, sandy beach. Or from the veranda of your private over-water cabana. Read More About World's Top 5 Over-Water Luxury Bungalow Destinations

Yes, food is a basic need, without it you can not survive, but some are very selective in food, for example, what to eat from where to eat, or something like that. Some people enjoy their travel only because of food and some travel only for food. Today I am posting here the top 10 food markets of the world.

Why the Bali beaches are special?

With an eagerness to find out why Bali is popular for its beaches, I found a Bali guide from Hillmannwonders that depicts a few reasons for its popularity.

p_beach

As it quotes”
Bali has many long, palm-fringed, white-sand beaches kissed by clear, warm tropical waters. There are beaches for every taste. Some are packed with sunbathers and lined with convenient shops, eateries, bars, and other tourist facilities. Others are populated with big-wave-seeking surfers. Still others are serenely off the beaten path and shared by few people.

Best known beaches

West Coast - They face the warm Indian Ocean waters and are admirably oriented for sunset watching.

Jimbaran Beach  - Lovely location. Favorite of sunbathers seeking a long, quiet, scenic tropical beach. Never a blanket of people, even during peak season. Luxury resort hotels fronting the beach are discreetly semi-hidden from view.

Kuta Beach - Deservingly praised for its length and white sands, though the beach in front of Kuta’s main tourist facilities can become packed.

Legian Beach - Adjacent and similar to Kuta Beach, though not quite as busy and commercialized.

East Coast - These lie along the body of water between Bali and Lombok Island.

Nusa Dua Beach is populated with many international-style five-star resort hotels. It can occasionally become moderately crowded.

Sanur Beach - Once Bali’s most popular beach. Still pleasant, though waves in recent decades have eroded some sand.

Candi Dasa Beach - Half as busy and developed as Sanur and Nusa Dua’s beaches, but has in recent decades suffered even more sand erosion than Sanur Beach.

North Coast - Lovina is the most tourist-visited destination on Bali’s north coast. It is known for its “black sand” beaches (”gray” would be more accurate).

Positive - The Lovina area is less developed and commercialized than tourism centers like Kuta.

Negative - The beaches are hardly tropical paradises. They experience the sometimes hot and humid tropical Bali Sea climate. “Lovina” is a collective name for a string of seaside villages.

Bali – A Traveler’s Ultimate Destiny

balilove2

Bali’s natural attractions include miles of sandy beaches (many are well-known amongst surfers), picturesque rice terraces, towering active volcanoes over 3,000 meters (10,000 ft.) high, fast-flowing rivers, deep ravines, pristine crater lakes, sacred caves, and lush tropical forests full of exotic wildlife.

The island’s rich cultural heritage is visible everywhere – in over 20,000 temples and palaces, in many colorful festivals and ceremonies (including tooth filings and cremations), in drama, music, and dance.

You can experience Bali on many different excursions and guided tours by coach, private car or “Big Bike”, by boat or by air plane: seeing Bali’s beaches and rice terraces, the famous Besakih Temple on the slopes of holy Mount Agung, Lake Batur and it’s active volcano, Ubud, Legian, Kuta, Nusa Dua, and the temples of Tanah Lot and Ulu Watu from a helicopter is a really special experience. For helicopter tours and private charters (3 to 6 passengers), please contact the Balivillas.com Service Center at 703-060 as soon as you arrive.

Most full-day tours by car (about 8 to 10 hours, min 2 persons) cost about US$45 to US$50 per person, half-day tours US$30 to US$35. These prices include a multi-lingual guide and transport in an air-conditioned private car, all entrance fees, but no meals. Which guide and driver you choose can make or break your day: be warned that those who offer very low prices tend to waste your time by showing you hardly any more than those shops which pay them a commission on your purchases.

If you are a traveler, if you love romantic ambiance, and you want to enjoy your vacations in the best resorts in BALI, do visit BALI…
